The duties of the surveyor
The surveyor must be familiar with the laws governing the practice of land surveying and with laws regarding the ownership of real property (land). These laws may originate on the federal, state, or local level. In the role of translator, the surveyor interprets legal descriptions of land into tangible positions on the ground. By applying the science of measurement, the surveyor takes conceptual technical specifications from construction plans to positions on the ground that can be used as a basis for the actual construction. The surveyor can take ground features (topography) and prepare a map or other form of information for use by related disciplines. The combination of both of these processes can be used for the perpetuation of a particular location, possibly to show delineation of ownership, or to document change over time.
Surveyors must also have investigative skills. One of the first tasks the surveyor must perform on any project location is to definitively and precisely answer the question "where am I?" as a basis for subsequent measurements. This phase of investigation would include finding monuments in the field that have corresponding references in documents of ownership.
Finally, the surveyor in the private sector must be a business person. It is important that the scope of services to be provided be clearly defined for the client, and the price for those services set forth as definitively and accurately as possible. Since the amount of work to be done is often indefinite at the beginning of a project, provisions must be in place for situations in which the amount of work is more or less than what was originally anticipated. These changes in scope must be accurately delineated for the client. Proper skills in communication, both written and verbal, are essential to successfully sustaining a project from inception to completion.
