Topic 37. System of Education in Great Britain

Education System in Great Britain

Education in Great Britain is compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 5 and 16. At the age of 16 some pupils leave school and get jobs. Others stay at school until the age of 18.

PRIMARY EDUCATION. Children go to a primary school for 6 years, from 5 to 11. Primary schools are subdivided into infant schools and junior schools. At the age of 5 all children go to an infant school and stay there until they are 7. Then they go to a junior school and stay there until they are 11. At junior school pupils study arithmetic, reading and writing, which are all tested subjects.

SECONDARY EDUCATION. To receive secondary education children go to a comprehensive school. Young people stay there till they are 16. So, a comprehensive school offers 5-year courses to pupils of all levels of ability. Promotion to a higher class every year does not depend upon examination results, it is almost automatic. Pupils never repeat the year.

THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM. It consists of 10 subjects which all children must study at school. They are: English, Mathematics, Science, a Foreign Language, Technology and Design, History, Geography, Music, Art and Physical Training. Pupils also have such a subject as Religious Education, but parents have a right to withdraw their children from religious classes. Pupils pass written and practical tests in all subjects.

EXAMNATIONS. When the pupils finish secondary school they pass GCSE examination. GCSE stands for the General Certificate of Secondary Education.

THE SIXTH FORM. After comprehensive school the students can go to a grammar school or to a six-year college to get the courses they want.

“A”- level exam is taken at the age of 18. It is the main standard for the entrance to the university.

Some children go to public schools and parents pay for their studies. Some public schools are known all over the world, for example Eton. It provides fine teaching facilities, for example in science, languages, computing and design. Its students are mainly from aristocratic and upper-class families.
