Text A. My University

My university is one of the best in the country. It was founded in 1915 by the decree of the Tsar. However, the history of the Faculty of Economics is not very long. It was opened only in 1965. It was a large step in the development of economics as an academic discipline. It is a regional centre for research and teaching now. The special library at our faculty is the largest collection of books on economics in English in the region. Scholars come here to conduct their research. There are many important databases and statistical programs at the computer laboratory.

There are several departments at our faculty: Department of Political Economy and Economic Policy, Department of Market Theory, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Economics and Entrepreneurship, Department of History of Economic Thought,

Department of Statistics, Department of Economy of Labour, Department of Finances and Credit. Each of them has a small library. There is also a research laboratory for studying market reforms and quality of life.

Among humanities such academic disciplines, as History of Russia, History of Philosophy and Political Science are taught. One of the most important disciplines is Foreign Language. English is the most popular foreign language. We have many opportunities for international exchange at our faculty. Knowledge of English is very important for the international exchange and scientific work. We also study English for Economists. Many

students learn a second foreign language, such as German, French or Spanish.

Studying economics is not easy. An economist has to be a universally prepared specialist with general university background and specific knowledge in one of the subfields of economics. We study the following economic disciplines in the first year: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Analysis, Economic Geography, Economics of Foreign Countries.

Each student at our faculty has a choice of specialization. He or she can choose the future specialization within the field of economics. It is a very important decision to make.

Athletics and sports are also very important in the life of the department. Besides regular classes of Physical Education we have several sports sections, such as badminton, volleyball, football, swimming and table tennis.

Cultural life is very important for students. We have a student theatre, student rock group and a yoga centre. We also have a student psychological consultation.

I am very proud to be a student of economics at our university.
