Nonverbal communication: Experimental and Psychological Research

The monograph sums up author’s many-year experience in the form of selected works (articles, monographs, patents, etc) on experimental and psychological research of nonverbal communication (NC) in the system of voice communication and vocal art. In conformity with the complex psychophysiological and acoustic nature of the subject of research – human voice and speech – the work takes a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and systemic approach with the use of acoustic, physiological and psychological methods and computer techniques purposefully designed by the author.
The monograph presents the most complete classification of various types of NC and provides their psychological characteristics. It describes specific features of NC compared with verbal speech and substantiates a theoretical model of a dual-channel (verbal-nonverbal) structure of voice communication. The work introduces a number of new notions into the theory of speech communication and vocal art: “emotional hearing”, “vocal hearing”, “psychological portrait of a person by nonverbal peculiarities of his/her speech (voice)” and “psychological lie detector” among others.
Basing on the research of nonverbal features of the voice of vocalists of different professional and qualification levels, including outstanding masters of vocal art, fundamentals of the resonance theory of the singing art were developed as well as computer techniques for diagnostics and development of vocal giftedness.
Newly developed techniques as well as the results of the research are oriented on the extensive application in research and practice: psychological testing, professional selection, pedagogy, perfection of elocution, rhetoric and vocal arts, imageology, linguistics, medical psychology, phoniatrics and criminalistics among other disciplines as well as on specialists working in the field of voice and speech.
