The
XX century is the age of modern architecture and tall buildings. In
some countries the heated discussion on the spread of tall
structures in cities, especially in those having historical
traditions, has blown up into a real war. Some think skyscrapers
spoil the view of the old towns. “Glass boxes” are monotonous,
they say. Some believe that, on the contrary, high structures built
in old cities improve their skyline and add a certain modern touch
to their old-fashioned looks. What do you think about all this?
The
achievements of the ancient Greeks and Romans in building still
underline the culture of construction of our contemporaries.
Some believe, though, that modern architecture and the principles
of town planning have little if anything to do with the ideas of
the antique masters. What do you think about it? Can you support
your point of view with facts and examples?
What

Why do environmentalists say we should avoid spray cans, practise
organic farming and use unleaded petrol, recycled paper and bottle
banks? What else are they in favour of?
43
Talk about the following environmental problems. What should u
be done?
44
During the last 30 years environmental protection has become a vital
necessity for people. What do you think has stimulated man’s
interest in the problems of environment? Consider the following and
expand on the points which you think especially significant?
The
problems of environment include a wide range of burning issues:
nature destruction and pollution, extermination of wildlife on
global scale, endangering human health with industrial wastes, etc.
There
are the by-products of massive industrialization confronting all
great industrial countries with the most serious problem of
environment mankind ever faced, that of pollution.
The
“green belts” not only provide restful relaxation, they are
regarded as important allies in the battle against air pollution.
Among
the simple but far disappearing blessings is the small of clean
fresh air and the good taste of pure water.
How
the problem of pollution has been and is being tackled has a great
deal to do with politics and social initiative.
