Wong Fei is an only child and lives with her family in Shanghai. She is studying law at Jiaotong University and she will turn eighteen in a few weeks.
My goals are to get my degree, to go to England to study marketing and then to come back and find a good job. China is changing and you can get rich now in China.
When I’m earning a good salary, I’d like to do more travelling but I have to take care of my parents too. They are going to retire soon. They’ve given me a good life and I have to do the same for them. This is the way things are in China and it should be the same everywhere.
Normally, when you get married, you’re only allowed to have one child. However, because I’m an only child, I can have two children if I marry another only child. Anyway, at the moment it’s all a dream because I’m single.
I like reading stories on the Internet. I also like reading fashion magazines like Vogue. Perhaps my favourite thing is to go shopping with friends. We don’t have much money but it’s fun to look in the windows and think about what we’re going to buy when we are rich.
Isabel is in her last year at an inner-city (nearer to centre) Madrid secondary school. If she goes to university she will have at least five more years at home.
I live with my parents and my brother . My sister, who is nearly twenty –seven, left home a month ago. This means I don’t have to share my bedroom anymore.
Our mother cooks and irons for us –she shouldn’t do this but she enjoys it! She also works. We’re all a bit spoiled, I supposed.
I’m in the last of my two years of baccalaureate. I want to study medicine at university because I want to become a doctor. I have to get very high marks to get a place on that course at a public university. You can get into a private university with lower marks but my parents can’t afford that- especially as there are three of us.
I’d like to travel, but I think I’ll always live in Spain. I’d love to get married and have children too. People in Spain don’t have so many children now because of the cost, and everybody wants an easy comfortable life.
Gregor is from Moscow. He is a sculpture student at Moscow University and lives with his parents and two brothers. He turned eighteen last month.
In Russia men aged eighteen usually have to go into army and do military service (военная служба). This should be optional but it’s not. Fortunately, I don’t have to go because I’ve got health problems. I’m actually quite happy about that! It means I can continue studying sculpture at university. Who wants to be a soldier when you can be a student?
In the future I want to stay in Russia. I know that you can earn more if you work abroad, but this my home. You have to work hard to earn a good salary in Russia, but you can succeed (добиться успеха/ своего).
In my free time I like listening to rock and hip-hop. I also like going to restaurants and bars, and concerts and playing football, like teenagers everywhere, I suppose.
Discuss.
Who has the hardest life: Wong Fei, Isabel or Gregor? Why?
Who has the easiest life? Why?
Who are you most similar to?
What were you doing when you were eighteen?

You shouldn’t/ don’t have to smoke during meals- it’s annoying.

You can/ should see the doctor at 5p.m. on Thursday. That’s the earliest time she is free.
Exercise 7. Complete these sentences with should (n’t), can (‘t) or (don’t) have to.

A.You need to think carefully about your personality.
B.There are lots of different jobs in engineering.
C.Think carefully about what you are interested in.
D.Engineering is a big subject.
A job in Engineering
1. There are lots of different types of engineering. The one thing they have in common is that they all use Maths and Science to improve industry and manufacturing. The whole science of engineering can be broadly divided into three main areas:
■ civil engineering (buildings, roads, etc.)
■ mechanical engineering (machines, including tool-making)
■ electrical engineering (electricity, lighting, etc.)
2.Each of these three main areas can be divided again into specialist subjects: civil engineering covers mining and bridge building, mechanical engineering covers aeronautical and automobile engineering, electrical engineering covers electricity generation and wiring.
3. Clearly there is a big difference between building a road and designing a computer system so the best advice for students is:
■ think carefully about which area of engineering interests you most. It is difficult to study if you are not interested - and you may do the job until you are 60 years old.
■ think about what sort of person you are. Will you be happiest working in an office, in a factory, or outdoors? Do you mind getting dirty? Do you want to work with other people or alone? If you like wearing high heels and beautiful clothes, you may not be happy on a building site.
4. When you have decided which area you are interested in and thought realistically about what sort of person you are, then you can decide what sort of engineer you want to be.
3.Read the text again. Choose the correct words in italics to complete the sentences (1 -4) below.
Engineering is/isn't a small area.
Engineering is/isn't about Science and Maths.
Office buildings and bridges are/aren’t examples of civil engineering.
Tool- and machine-making are/ aren’t examples of electrical engineering.
Vocabulary
4. Look at the types of engineers (1 -5) below. First, underline any new words and check the meaning in the glossary or your dictionary. Then write whether the jobs are indoor or outdoor, and dirty or clean.
1. petroleum 2. sanitation 3. Textile 4. computer 5. chemical
Writing
5. Write your name and the type of engineer you want to be on a small piece of paper. Put your paper in a box and take out another student's paper. Write three questions to check if that person is choosing the right type of engineering.
Example: Mining engineer
■ Do you like working indoors or outdoors?
■ Do you mind getting dirty?
■ Do you like going underground?
