TEXT B

LONDON

London, the capital of Great Britain, is situated on the Thames. "Great London"1 stretches for over thirty miles from north to south and for over thirty miles from east to west. Its population is about seven million. London is the biggest industrial and cultural centre of Great Britain.

One of the oldest buildings in London is the Tower. For hundreads of years, from the eleventh century, the Tower was a fortress, a residence of kings and a prison.

St.Paul's Cathedral is not very far from the Tower. The cathedral is the most striking building of the city.

The City of London is a very small part of it, but it is the most important banking and commercial centre of the country. Every day over a million white-collar workers come to the City offices and banks.

If you walk along the Strand2 you will reach the Houses of Parliament. The new building for the Houses of Parliament was built in 1840 on the site of the old Palace of Westminster. When Parliament sits, a flag flies from the Victoria Tower by day and the light in the Clock Tower above the famous Big Ben burns by night.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT

THE HISTORY OF LONDON

London was not built as a city in the same way as Paris or New York. It began life as Roman fortification at a place where it was not possible to cross the River Thames. A wall was built around the town for defence, but during the long period of peace which followed the Norman Conquest, people built outside the walls. This building continued over the years, especially to the west of the city. In 1655 there was a terrible plague in London, so many people left the city and escaped to the villages in the surrounding countryside. In 1666 the Great Fire of London ended the plague, but it also destoyed much of the city. Although people returned to live in the rebuilt city after the plague and the Great Fire, there were never again so many Londoners living in the city centre.

Nowadays many people prefer to commute over 150 Km every day to work in London but to live far away from the city in the country or in other towns.
