American Business Etiquette

In the United States business is conducted at the speed of light! So when going to the United States, remember that the Americans like to be efficient and quick with their work.

Greetings

American businessmen and women shake hands with one another when greeting and most of the time when leaving a meeting as well. A brief but firm handshake is the norm. A light hug is common among Americans who are friends with one another, and U.S. professionals may extend phrases such as, "How are you?" while shaking hands. A answer "Fine, thank you" is sufficient.

Communication and Negotiations

In a business meeting, it is good for colleagues to ask questions when they do not understand something; however, each person should have his turn to speak. It is rude to interrupt. American professionals also speak directly in business.

Punctuality

American professionals like punctuality, as being on time shows respect for colleagues. To make an even better impression, come up a few minutes early. Business meetings are not very long in most cases, since Americans prefer to "get down to business" quickly, and often stick to an agenda to keep the meeting organized.

Professional Titles and Business Cards

It is common for American professionals to refer to one another by first name after becoming familiar with each other. When doing business with a colleague in America for the first time, it is proper etiquette to address the individual as "Mr.", "Mrs." or "Ms." , followed by their last name, until invited to do otherwise. Business cards are given at the start or conclusion of a meeting.

Giving Gifts

Sometimes it is good to bring gifts to an initial business meeting. American professionals generally welcome this. Remember if the gift is expensive, it may be seen as a bribe. International business professionals can present American colleagues with gifts such as books, artwork and even food that is native to the foreign professional's home. When invited to the home of a businessman or woman, guests should bring an item such as chocolates, flowers or quality wine . Americans usually open their gifts as soon as they receive them.

Some more points to keep in mind:

* Keep at least an arms length distance when speak to an American person.

* Americans smile a lot, even at strangers. They like it if their smiles are returned.

* Eye contact is important when shaking someone’s hand. But keep a firm grip!

* “See you later” is just an expression. People say this even if they never plan to see you again.

Remember: American business etiquette requires that American women be treated no differently than men. American women don’t appreciate the gender- related “special help” that most. Asian and Middle Eastern men usually find OK. So, whenever going to lunch, keep in mind that whoever invites pays!
