In 1902 a new faculty was set up as a part of the Polytechnical Institute. It was the Shipbuilding Faculty. In 1930 the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute was founded on its basis. A lot of prominent scientists helped to organize the Institute; they carried out research and scientific work and developed important problems of shipbuilding science and industry. Since then the institute became the leading educational establishment in this field and a lot of new faculties and specialties were opened. It is called the State Marine Technical University now.
The University is one of the largest higher schools in our country. It has nine faculties and a lot of departments where students can get higher education not only in shipbuilding but in economics, law, computing and mathematics. The faculties at our University are as follows:
The Faculty of Shipbuilding and Ocean Technology. It is the leading faculty of the University and trains naval architects in ship designing and ship repair.
The Faculty of Marine Engineering and Automation was organized in 1945 and trains marine engineers in problems of ship power engineering and automatic control systems on various types of ships.
The Faculty of Designing Marine Devices was also established in 1945. The faculty trains engineers in designing and producing marine technology for the exploration of the World Ocean and for application of devices and equipment in shipbuilding.
The Faculty of Economics organized in 1939 trains economists and managers for the shipbuilding industry.
There are also the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of Contract Education, the Faculty of Special Purpose Contract Education and the Faculty of Secondary Technical Education (College). The Faculties of Evening and Extramural (Correspondence) Education give an opportunity to get higher education for part time students who work during the day.
Highly-qualified academic staff provides students with lectures seminars, practical, laboratory and scientific work. Students of the first and second years study mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, descriptive geometry, strength of materials, theoretical mechanics, science of materials and other subjects which form the basic knowledge in science and engineering. Students also are given courses in philosophy, sociology, history, economics, history of culture, foreign languages and other humanities. Physical culture is also compulsory during the first years of study.
The academic year is divided into two terms which are followed by examinations. At the end of each examination period students have holidays.
The undergraduates, who are interested in research, may join students’ scientific society. There they carry out various investigations under the supervision of teachers and professors of the basic departments.
The University degree course runs for five years and a half. The undergraduates defend diploma projects and receive the engineer’s degree which qualifies them to work in industry, research or teaching.
