Text 7. Archimedes

Archimedes [ˏɑ:kɪʹmɪ:dɪz] was the greatest mathematician of antiquity.

He was born in the Greek city of Syracuse [ʹsaɪǝrǝkju:z] (г. Сиракузы)on the island of Sicily [ʹsɪsɪlɪ] (о. Сицилия) about 287 B.C. Archimedes died in 212 B.C.Archimedes is universally acknowledged to be the greatest of ancient mathematicians. He studied at Euclid’s school (probably after Euclid’s death), but his work far surpassed the works of Euclid. His achievements are particularly impressive and his proofs are noted not only for brilliance but for unequalled clarity. Archimedes made advances in number theory, algebra and analysis but is most renowned for his many theorems of plane and solid geometry. He was first to prove Heron’s formula for the area of a triangle. His books include Floating Bodies, Spirals, The Sand Reckoner, Measurement of the Circle, Sphere and Cylinder. Many stories have been told about Archimedes.

There is a story which says that one day when Archimedes was taking a bath he discovered a phenomenon which later became known as Archimedes’sprinciple. He was asked to determine the composition of the golden crown of the King of Syracuse who thought that the goldsmith had mixed base metal with the gold. It is said that when the idea how to solve this problem came to Archimedes, he became so excited that he ran along the streets shouting “Eurika! Eurika!” (I found it!). Comparing the weight of pure gold with that of the crown when it was immersed in water and when not immersed, he solved the problem.
