1) Trial by jury is an ancient and important feature of English justice. 2) It is the main element in criminal trials in the Crown Court. 3) Jury membership was once linked to the ownership of property. 4) But now most categories of British residents are obliged to undertake jury service when summoned. 5) A jury consists of twelve jurors who are ordinary people chosen at random from local electoral registers. 6) They listen to the evidence at the trial and give their verdict on the facts. 7) In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the verdict may be "guilty" or “not guilty", the latter resulting in acquittal. 8) Until 1967 the verdict had to be unanimous. 9) But now the judge will accept a majority verdict after the jury has deliberated for more than two hours. 10) If the jury acquits the defendant, the prosecution has no right of appeal and the defendant cannot be tried again for the same offence.
