  1. Activity 6. Present Simple Tense.

Verbal model ~ I start work at 9 o`clock.

The Present Simple Tense (Настоящее время, простой аспект действия)

Рис. 1 Схема времён (Past, Present, Future Time) и аспектов действия (Simple, Continuous, Perfect) при образовании глагольных форм (Tense)

  1. Teacher introduces sentence such as

e.g. Verbal model ~ You start work every day at 9 o`clock.

Structural model ~ Subject – verb -…

Establish that you do these things every day and regularly. It is the universal truth. Activity6.1. Teacher elicits 4 sentences from Students in the present simple.

  1. Students transpose the following sentences to the third person singular. Note: the third person singular is valid only for present time and it is determined by the nouns that can be substituted with the pronouns "he, she, it" as well as the question words "who, what, which" unless otherwise stated. In the third person singular we add “~s, es” to the verb.

~S

e.g. ~ He starts work every day at 9 o`clock.

In the third person singular in the present time, we carry out a transformation in the structural model adding ~s or ~es to the verb: e.g. start – starts, watch – watches.

Activity6.2. Use the following expressions with “He, She” instead of “You”.

Model: You go to the university. - He goes to the university.

~ You finish work every day at 1700. (finishes)

~ You go home by metro. (goes)

~ You have lunch at 1300. (has)

~ You are busy in the morning. (is)

~ You do your homework in the evenings. (does)

  1. We frequently use the following time expressions (adverbs of frequency) with the present simple: always (всегда), regularly (регулярно), often (часто), usually (обычно), sometimes (иногда), seldom (редко), occasionally (периодически), never (никогда) etc.

In sentences with a weak verb, we put the time expression before a notional verb that serves a Predicate.

e.g. Verbal model ~ You always start work at 9 o`clock.

Structural model ~ Subject – adverb – verb -…

In sentences with a strong verb "be", we put the time expression after a notional verb that serves a Predicate.

e.g. Verbal model ~ He is always busy on Mondays.

Structural model ~ Subject – be - adverb – …
