IN -

Aspirin:
Bayer
Aspirin is designed to be swallowed without bitter taste or burning
sensation in the throat. The tablets have a remarkable
micro-thin coating so they go down easily and quickly. Yet the
coating is so thin that it dissolves fast so the medicine goes to
work fast.
Important
notice!
Aspirin
has been used safely more than any other medication. However, like
all medications, it can produce unwanted effects.
Should
you have a predisposition to allergies or asthma, if you have a
gastric ulcer or symptoms relating to that condition or if you are
taking a medication that affects the clotting of blood, you should
consult your physician before using any pain relievers containing
aspirin. Be sure to read carefully the list of active ingredients
that appears on the label of every packaged medicine. The dosages of
Bayer Aspirin recommended are appropriate for the aches and
pains that may be safely treated by home medication. If these doses
do not give relieve or if this medication is otherwise
unsatisfactory to you, your particular condition may require the
attention of a physician.

UNIT
III Antibiotics: Pros
and Cons
One
of the first antibiotics, penicillin, was discovered by British
bacteriologist Alexander Fleming in 1928. He had been cultivating
various bacteria in Petri dishes, and once noted that on a plate
containing a culture of Staphylococcus aureus some blue- green mold
had sprung up overnight. It was surrounded by a clear, transparent
ring, while other parts of culture had a cloudy look. But within
that crystal-clear ring, some epidemic had wiped out all germlife.
The botanist's name for this mold family Penicillinum came from a
Latin word meaning "little brush" which is a very good
description of this broom shaped tips of the fibers.
Fleming
cultivated his "little brushes" and obtained a juice which
he methodically injected into mice that were infected with
streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci. The "thing"
that was in the juice (Fleming was soon to call it penicillin)
decimated the germs in the mice's bodies just as it had those
in the Petri dish.
Fleming
found that it was effective against many Gram positive bacteria in
laboratory conditions, he even used locally
28
applied,
crude preparations of this substance, from culture filtrates,
to control eye infections.
However
he couldn't purify this compound because of its instability, and it
was not until the scientists, Florey and Chain, worldng in the USA,
managed to produce the antibiotic on an industrial scale for
widespread use. All these scientists shared the Nobel Prize for this
work, and rightly so - penicillin rapidly became the "wonder
drug" which saved literally millions of lives. It is still a
"front line" antibiotic, in common use for some bacterial
infections although the development of penicillin-resistance in
several pathogenic bacteria now limits its effectiveness.
The
two natural penicillins obtained from culture filtrates of
Penicillium notatum or the closely related species P. Chrysogenum
are penicillin G and the more acid-resistant penicillin V. They
are active only against Gram-positive bacteria and not against
Gram-negative species, including many serious pathogens like
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The natural penicillins were extremely
variable for treating wound pathogens such as staphylococcus in
wartime Europe.
An
expanded role for penicillins came from the discovery that natural
penicillins can be modified chemically by removing the acyl group to
leave 6-aminopenicillanic acid and then adding acyl group that
confir new properties. These modern semisynthetic penicillins
such as Ampicillin, Carbenicillin and Oxacillin have various
specific properties such as:
resistance
to stomach acids so that they can be taken
orally,
a
degree of resistance to penicillinaze (penicillin- destroying enzime
produced by some bacteria),
extended
range of activity against some Gram-negative bacteria.
The
phenomenal success of penicillin led to the search for other
antibiotic-producing microorganisms especially from soil
environments. One of the early successes (1943) was the discovery
of Streptomycin from a soil actinomycete, Streptomyces gri-
