2. Situation

Last year you took an American history course. There were 200 students in the class. One of the requirements of the course was a ten-page term paper. You worked hard on your paper and received an A.

This year a close friend of yours is enrolled in the same class. Your friend is a good student, but recently has had a sick mother, and he/she has been busy taking care of a younger brother and sister.

Your friend comes to you and asks to copy your research paper from last year. Your friend is sure that the professor will not remember the paper because there are so many students in the class.

3. Discussion Questions

Discuss the following questions in small groups.

  1. Would you allow your friend to copy your paper in this situation? Why or why not?

  2. Would your decision be different if your friend's mother were not sick?

  3. Would your decision be different if you thought your friend might get caught?

  4. Has a friend ever asked to copy from you? What did you do?

  1. Have you ever asked a friend if you could copy a paper? Why? How did you feel about it?

  2. If a person cheats in school, do you think this person will also cheat in other areas of life? Why or why not?

4. Role-Play

Many universities in the United States and Canada have a "student affairs council." A council is a group of students who make decisions about how to punish students who break the university's rules. Suppose that in this situation, the student who copied the paper gets caught. The student affairs council meets to discuss the situation and decide on the student's punishment.

Roles

  1. the student who cheated

  2. the student who wrote the paper originally

  3. the chairperson of the student affairs council

  4. members of the student affairs council (all other classmates)

Procedure

The council should sit in a circle, if possible.

  1. The chairperson begins the meeting and explains the case.

  2. The council interviews the student who cheated.

  3. The council interviews the student who wrote the paper originally.

  1. After the students leave, the council decides what punishment, if any, the cheating students will receive.

5. Follow-Up

Write a letter from the student affairs council to the student who copied, informing the student of the council's decision.
