Western harbor lies at the S entrance to the Blynman Canal between Fort Point and Stage Head .This cove provides good anchorage in depths of 7 to 9 meters, soft mud and clay. The shore should be given a berth of 2 cables.
S. Light is exhibited at an elevation of 28 feet from a dark grey hexagonal tower, 20 feet in height, situated on the head of the breakwater. This light is partly obscured when viewed from SW.
Red square leading beacons are situated on the Lloyd Point, about 2 miles south-eastward of P. The front beacon is 12 feet; the rear beacon is 15 feet. The beacons are 2 cables apart, and in line bear 201.

If a vessel is at anchor at a predetermined point, such as an assigned anchorage, she must consider limitations of land, current, shoals and other vessels when determining a direction of approach. Where conditions permit, make the approach heading into a current. Approach from a direction with a prominent NAVAID, preferably a range, available dead ahead to serve as a steering guide. If practicable, it will be better to use a straight approach of at least 1200 yards which will permit the vessel to steady on the required course.
During the approach to the anchorage plot fixes at frequent intervals. The navigator must advise the conning officer of any tendency of the vessel to drift from the desired track. The navigator must frequently report the conning officer of the distance to go, permitting adjustment of the speed so that the vessel will be dead in the water or have very slight sternway when the anchor is let go.
At the moment of letting the anchor go, take a fix and plot the vessel`s exact position on the chart. Determine the position of the vessel at the time of letting go the anchor as accurately as possible.
Veer the anchor chain to a length equal to five to seven times the depth of the water at the anchorage. The exact amount to veer is the function of both vessel type and severity of weather expected at the anchorage. When calculating the scope of anchor chain to veer, take into account the maximum height of tide. Once the ship is anchored, construct two separate circles around the ship`s position. These circles are called the swing circle and the drag circle. Use the swing circle to check for navigation hazards and use the drag circle to ensure the anchor is holding.
