18. Study the use of the modal verbs.

Verbs may(might), must, will, can(could) are so called modal verbs, which show the attitude of a speaker to the action in question. One of the functions of a modal verb is to express probability of the action. The choice of this or that modal depends on the confidence of a speaker about the possibility of an action.

If we speak about the probability of the past action, we use the Perfect Infinitive (have + Participle II).

Will expresses 100% of probability of the action in future.

He will be 50 next year. – В следующем году ему будет 50.

Must expresses 90% of probability.

Bob’s car is at the car park. He must be in the office. – Машина Боба стоит на стоянке. Он должен быть в офисе.

Bruce must have forgotten to send us a copy of the draft. – Брюс наверняка забыл выслать нам копию проекта.

May(might) and can(could) express 50% or less of the probability.

Robert may not know the address of a new branch. – Роберт может и не знать адрес нового филиала.

He may(might) have left Dresden. – Он, вероятно, уже уехал из Дрездена.

He cannot have moved on. – не может быть, чтобы он перешел на другую работу.
