5. Translate the sentences using the phrases:

case: випадок

In no case: ні в якому випадку

this is not the case: це не так

In either case: у цьому й іншому випадку

1. In case there is no current in a conductor, there can be no electric field around it. 2. A material which in some cases would be looked upon as an insulator, under different conditions, would be looked upon as a conductor. 3. In the case of measuring a mass we determine its weight. 4. In all cases of measuring the magnitude of any phenomenon we use the effects produced by it. 5. In no case could high voltage be used in our experiment. 6. Rubber and ebonite would suit in either case as they are excellent insulators.

6. If or when? Look at the difference and complete the sentences:

1. When a current flows, we’ll see… (it will flow)

2. If we use semiconductors in industry, we’ll achieve…. (we may use)

3. When a conductor is heated, it can have… (it will be heated)

4. If the batteries are disconnected, we’ll have… (they may be disconnected)

7. Look at the model and choose the right variant from the brackets

Model: I wouldn’t do it like that if I were you.

If we applied a high voltage, the experiment would be successful.

1. If the battery (were disconnected, would be disconnected), we (would have, had) a typical lighting system.

2. If I (had, would have) more time, I (learnt, would learn) more about either polymers or synthetic fuels.

3. If you (changed, would change) the conditions of experiment, what (did, would) you get?

4. Do you think it (were, would be) a good idea if I (used, would use) another source of electromotive force?

5. What (did, would) you say if I (told, would tell) you that I saw an electric current?

6. I (conducted, would conduct) a new physical experiment tomorrow if I (had, would have) the required equipment.

8. Divide the sentence into two groups: real and unreal. Define the Tense of each sentence

1. In case there is no current in a conductor, there can be no electric field around it. 2. Should a permanent magnet be moved in and out of a coil of wire, both the magnet and the coil would be used as a simple electric generator. 3. Providing the two ends of the wire are maintained at a difference of potential, the electric current will flow through a conductor. 4. What would happen if a freely suspended needle were brought near a conductor carrying a current? In this case the needle would tend to place itself at right angles to the conductor. 5. It has been calculated that if a giant Atlantic liner could be constructed of light weight alloys, it would require engines of only 100,000 horsepower instead of about 160,000 horsepower to maintain the same speed. 6. Had there been no Earth's gravitation, the artificial satellites would have moved through airless space in a straight line at a uniform speed. 7. If the satellite's speed were much less than the necessary one, it might drop and enter the denser layers of the atmosphere. 8. It would have been impossible to launch space satellites and space rockets provided we had not had the necessary polymeric materials and synthetic fuels. 9. If the Earth were a small ball, 3 centimeters in diameter, the Sun would be a globe (ball) 274 cm in diameter. 10. Unless the temperature rises, the speed of the motion of the molecules will not increase. 11. Were the temperature increased, the velocity of the molecular motion would also be increased. 12. If you were asked ‘How can electric charges be made to flow and what factors influence their flow?’, what would you answer?
