1.Correct the mistakes if any.

  1. Ellie was standing just by a tall fur tree. Her hare was the soft brown colour of an autumn leaf.

  2. She was looking at me, her lips just parted, looking slightly startled.

  3. Her voice was very soft and gentle, it might have been a little girl’s voice.

  4. There was a new independence about her, a new confident in herself. The first to arrive was Mr Lippincott. He was elderly man, dry and precise in appearance.

  5. I made no secret of the fact that I would been a rolling stone.

2.Translate the following.

There are people (you’ve probably noted it also) who have the unconscious faculty of making the world spin around themselves, throb and expand, and contract and go dizzy. Then when they are gone away, you feel sick and lonesome and meaningless.

In the chemistry lab at school, did you ever hold a test-tube, pouring in liquids and powders and seeing nothing happen until a certain liquid or a certain powder is pored in and then everything begins to smoke and fume, bubble and boil, hiss to foam, and sometimes even explode? The tube is suddenly full of action and movement and life. Well, there are people like those certain liquids or powders; at a given movement they come into a room, or into a town, even into a country – and the place is never the same again. Things bubble, boil, change. The world begins to spin, ferment, and move into a new action.

3.Describe what is typical of a person when he/she is :

Consistent

Superstitious

Obstinate

Thrifty

Model: a friendly person usually smiles and says hallo when we meet.

4. Make up a situation to illustrate one of the proverbs.

1.A good face is a letter of recommendation.

2.A still tongue makes a wise head.

1.Correct the mistakes if any.

  1. To begin with, one couldn’t deny that Greta was, as Ellie had said, very beautiful and also, as Mr Lippincott had reluctantly admitted either, very handsome.

  2. If you say a woman is handsome it isn’t mean that actually you yourself admire her.

  3. Greta was a Nordic type of blond with a pure gold-corn coloured hair.

  4. She wore it piled high on her head in the fashion of the time.

  5. She looked what she was, a Swedish or north German.

2. Read the text. Describe twenty parts that you play in life.

Thomas was a soldier. Thomas was a gardener. Thomas was a tradesman. He was the housband of his wife and the father of his little daughter. He was an exile, thomas Stern, pole from Sochaczen (tossed out of Europe and into Africa by a movement of war). He was the son and the brother. Thomas was a crazy white man with a good heart who lived with Africans. “With this man I am always at home,” Martha thought.
