My name is Gerald Johnson. I am going to visit the Ukraine. Next autumn they are going to hold an International Conference on Mathematics in Kiev. I'm going to represent my country at this Conference.

I know much about the country and now I try to learn all I can about it.

Now I already know that this country has a territory of 603 700 km2. It occupies the central part of Europe. The population is about 48 million people. It is a multinational state. But Ukrainian is a nation language of the country. Ukraine is an industrial country and it has plenty of large centres of industry. I know Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donets’k, but there are others, of course.

Kyiv is the capital of the Ukraine. It’s population is about three million people. The city occupies a very large territory. It stretches very far for many kilometers from the centre of the city. They say that there are over 2,000 streets in Kiev nowadays.

Kyiv is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is known for its architectural monuments of ancient times such as St. Sophia Cathedral, the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery.

It is a city of science and art, a city of numerous educational and research institutions, a city of theatres and museums, a city of developed industry.

Day by day the old city grows more and more beautiful. It is the pride and glory of the Ukrainian people.

All the Kyivites do their best to turn Kiev into a model city.

Every day we can read about great changes that take place in this country. Those who visit the country say that the life of the people becomes better every day. I am looking forward to my visit there!
