Learning Foreign Languages Dialogue
A Hello there, Sveta. Which foreign language did you decide on from scratch in the first year?
B Hello, Olya! I wouldn’t say I had any choice. We got the offer of Spanish or French in our 4 groups and I ended up in the Spanish group. Why do you ask?
A Brilliant! I’m doing Spanish too as a second foreign language. You knew I’ve got to find some words and expressions, but I’ve only got a small dictionary. Could you help me?
B Be glad to. My mother got me a really good dictionary – 90 thousand words. I think we’ll find everything we need there.
A It’s really good that foreign languages are given such prominence nowadays, isn’t it?
B I’ll say! It would be difficult to exaggerate the significance of learning languages. Do you hear how intelligent I sound? But seriously, I really like our system. We can consolidate our English and at the same time learn a completely new language. The university gives us a really serious foundation in languages.
A And that’s really brilliant! You can’t imagine anybody managing without foreign languages nowadays. In the first place, it’s very important for the exchange of information. For example, if you’re going to do research or write a dissertation and you need to plough through a load of articles in various foreign journals. If you know the language, that solves the problem.
B And what about computers? And the Internet? They all require certain accomplishments, above all knowledge of English. Nowadays English is the established language world-wide.
A Yes, but I think English is necessary not just in science and technology, but for business too, and also of course for travel. My friend was telling me that in Finland, for instance, a lot of people speak English.
