Ms. Gale Games

21 Blackmail Road

Cambridge 5 October 2009

Dear Ms. Games,

I would like to apply for the position of a Senior Sales Manager advertised in The Economist on 4 October 2004. My work experience has familiarized me with many of the challenges of the sales domain. I am sure that this, together with my education and my understanding of the needs and expectations of the IT market, would be extremely relevant to the position.

Moreover, my fluent French and proficient Spanish would be very helpful in developing the business in these countries.

As you will notice on my enclosed resume, the position you are offering involves the issues I have been in charge of for these years. I would be pleased to come for an interview at any time convenient to you.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Erik Davidson

Smith: Good morning, Mr. Smirnov.

Smirnov: Good morning, Mr. Smith. Will you take a seat?

Smith: Thank you. It's very frosty in Moscow now, isn't it?

Smirnov: Yes, it has been very cold this month.

Smith: How is your business, Mr. Smirnov?

Smirnov: Fine, thank you. We've just started selling machines of a new model and we've received a lot of orders for them.

Smith: Yes, we know that. We have studied your latest catalogues closely and we are interested in buying some machines of this model.

Smirnov: Glad to hear that. The new model is certainly good. It's of very high quality.

Smith: Well, Mr. Smirnov, I'd like to look through your contract form.

Smirnov: Here you are, Mr. Smith.

Smith: Thank you very much. Let's meet again next Wednesday and discuss the terms of the contract.

Smirnov: All right. Good-bye for now.

Smith: Good-bye.

Задание 2. Прочитайте и переведите диалог. Сообщите, какие вопросы господин Блейк обсудил с господином Ворониным.

Discussing Contract Terms

Mr.Blake studied the Buyer's contract terms and on Tuesday came to discuss them with Mr. Voronin.

Voronin: Good morning, Mr. Blake.

Blake: Good morning, Mr. Voronin. Sorry, I'm a bit late.

Voronin: Never mind. How are things?

Blake: Not too bad, thanks.

Voronin: Would you like a cigarette?

Blake: No, I thank you, I don't smoke.

Voronin: May I offer you a cup of coffee?

Blake: Yes, thank you. Well, Mr. Voronin. I think we can discuss business now. I'd like to clarify some details with you. How many computers would you like to buy?

Voronin: We can buy 40 computers.

Blake: And when do you require the goods?

Voronin: As soon as possible, say in December.

Blake: In December? Let me see. I'm afraid, that's impossible. Our computers are selling very well, and we are heavy with orders. We can deliver only 20 computers in December.

Voronin: And what about the other 20 computers?

Blake: We can deliver them only in two months.

Voronin: All right. And how about the terms of delivery? I hope they suit you.

Blake: Yes, we agree to sell the goods FOB English port.

Voronin: Fine. Now comes the question of price. I must say that your price is not attractive to us. Can you give us a 10 % discount?

Blake: That's a bit difficult. The fact is our computers are in great demand. However we can offer you a discount of 5 % as we've been good partners for a long time.

Voronin: I think we can agree to a 5% discount. Could we meet tomorrow at 10 to sign the contract, Mr. Blake?

Blake: Yes, certainly. Mr. Voronin, would you like to have dinner with me tonight?

Voronin: With pleasure.

B

Clive Harris: Good morning, Jenny.  Jenny Ross: Morning, Mr. Harris. Clive Harris: Jenny, could you ring up Mr. Sakai's office in Japan. We need to set up a meeting. Not this week ... but the meeting must be before November 3rd. I'd like Kate, Don Bradley and Derek to be there.

Jenny Ross: Okay, Mr. Harris.

Jenny Ross: Hello, could I speak to Mr. Sakai's secretary... My name is Jenny from Bibury Systems in the UK. Mr. Harris would like to arrange a meeting with Mr. Sakai. I wonder if you could check Mr. Sakai's European itinerary.

Secretary: Just a moment. I’ll get my diary. Okay… He’ll be…

Clive Harris: Clive Harris. Derek Jones: Clive, it’s Derek. Clive Harris: Hello, Derek. What can I do for you? Derek Jones: Could you come down to the development workshop for a second?  Clive Harris: Derek, I'm busy. Derek Jones: Come on. It'll take ten minutes. Clive Harris: All right. I've got five minutes. I'm seeing Kate McKenna at eleven.

Clive Harris: Good morning, Geraldine.  Geraldine: Ah, Mr. Harris, I've just had a call from Mr. Peter's secretary I'm afraid he's going to be fifteen minutes late for his appointment this

afternoon. Clive Harris: Okay. That's no problem

No, I'm sorry, on Tuesday he has a meeting in the morning. Is the afternoon possible? All right. Thank you. Geraldine: Hello, Bibury Systems?

Jenny Ross: Kate! Have you got a minute? Kate McKenna: What's wrong, Jenny? Jenny Ross: I have a problem. I am trying to arrange the meeting with Mr. Sakai. He is in the UK for these three days. The first, the second and the third of November, but he is only available on the first and the second ... that's the Monday and the Tuesday. Clive Harris is in Scotland on the Tuesday and Don can't make Monday morning ... and you and Derek are both in meetings on Monday afternoon. What am I to do? Kate McKenna: Set up an evening meeting? Jenny Ross: No, Mr. Sakai's secretary says he has dinner engagements on the second and the third. Kate McKenna: Monday evening? Jenny Ross: Mr. Sakai arrives at the airport at nine o'clock on Monday morning and it's a nine hour flight. Monday evening is not a good time for the meeting. He'll be jet lagged. Kate McKenna: Then Derek and I will have to change our arrangements. May I see my diary? Aha! Change our ten o'clock meeting with Mr. Clark. Make it at half past eight on the 4th. Jenny Ross: You're giving a dinner party on the 4th.  Kate McKenna: Eight-thirty a.m., not eight-thirty p.m. Jenny Ross: That's going to be a long day.

Edward Green: Good morning

Jenny Ross: Hi, Edward. How's it going?  Edward Green: It's going very well! Kate McKenna: You look very happy. Edward Green: I am happy. I met Mr. Smith this morning at eight-thirty.  Kate McKenna: That's very good. And?  Edward Green: Mr. Smith liked our product. Kate McKenna: Good Edward Green: But he didn't like the name. Kate McKenna: Why not? Edward Green: He says Big Boss isn't a good name. He wants to call it Tycoon Tim. But he thinks Big Boss will sell. Kate McKenna: Well done! It's your first marketing success.
