Прошедшее простое время

Если нужно сообщить собеседнику:

- о действии, произошедшем в прошлом,

- о ряде последовательных действий в прошлом,

- об обычном, повторяющемся действии в прошлом,

следует употребить в речи прошедшее простое время.

По способу образования прошедшего простого времени все глаголы делятся на две группы: правильные глаголы и неправильные.

В утвердительной форме этого времени правильные глаголы имеют окончание -ed, которое произносится:

- после глухого согласного - [t] - worked [t];

- после звонкого согласного - [d] - lived [d];

- после гласного - [d] - played [d];

- после t и d - [id] - detected [id].

Неправильные глаголы образуют прошедшее простое время различными способами (см. таблицу неправильных глаголов), например: to begin - began. Эти глаголы надо выучить.

Отрицательная и вопросительная формы этого времени образуются так же, как и в настоящем простом времени. Вспомогательный глагол do имеет форму did.

В разговорной речи в отрицательной форме обычно употребляется сокращение didn't [didn't].

1. The Academy (that) we graduated from helped us to prepare for our future successful work.

2. When we entered the Academy we wanted to acquire good education, to become specialists of high qualification.

3. At that time the country needed more lawyers responsible for law and order.

4. During the years of studies we met many new and interesting people who became our close friends.
