Petrol. Try always to use the right kind of petrol. Always put enough petrol in your tank if you are going a long way.

Carburettor. Dirt can get into the carburettor. Clean it every 5,000 miles/8,000 kms. Take off the float chamber. Check the top of the float. Wash both in petrol. Move the needle valve with your finger.

Air cleaner. This is on the top of the carburettor. Clean it also. Some can be cleaned with petrol, but see your handbook.

Radiator. Always keep plenty of water in the radiator. Fill it to the top. If you put too much water in, it will flow away through a small pipe. Check the water every day. If the water gets too hot, it boils. Do not try to take off the radiator cap. It is dangerous.

Battery. The electricity from the battery goes to the coil, the distributor and the sparking plugs. Check the water in the battery every week. In hot dry countries do it every day. The water must cover the top of the plates in the battery. Add only clean distilled water.

Oil. Check the oil in the sump once a week. Check it when the engine is cool and the car is standing on flat ground. A dipstick on the side of the engine goes into the sump. The oil must be at the “full” mark of the dipstick. If not, add more.

Oil filter. This is on the side of the engine. It keeps the oil clean. Change it about every 8,000kms.

Oiling. The contact breaker and the distributor need a drop of oil sometimes. The dynamo shaft needs a little oil too. There is usually a small hole for this. Put some oil on moving joints like those from the accelerator to the carburettor.

Tyres. Check the pressure often. See your handbook for these. Keep a pressure gauge and a pump in your car.

Fan belt. Check the slack in the fan belt. It is usually about l-3cm. To make it tight, loosen the dynamo and move it outwards.

Hydraulic fluid. Check it often. It is necessary for the brakes and the clutch.

Cleaning. Keep your car and engine clean. A clean car seems to go better than a dirty one.

5. Answer the questions:

1) How is the oil level in the engine checked?

2) What places need a drop of oil sometimes?

3) How is the fan belt made tight?
