Cavaliers Cavalier #1

Starting Position: Grab the attacker’s right wrist with your left hand. With your right hand, “cap” the attacker’s right hand by placing your hand over his. This can be done with an explosive punching movement with your hand.

Pull the wrist toward you with your left and push down with your right, putting strain on the attacker’s wrist. Apply pressure using your upper body and even your legs, not just your arms. This hold should take place approximately a forearm’s length away from your body.

Pivot to your left on your right foot while driving the attacker’s arm down, slamming him to the ground. As you complete the move, bend your knees, NOT your back, to keep control of the attacker.

Immediately twist sharply back, laying your shin against his neck and your knee along his arm to prevent him from rolling out.

Tips: The cavalier is made by pushing the fist down toward the wrist, not by twisting it.

Cavalier #2

Starting Position: Grab the attacker’s right wrist with your left hand. With your right, “cap” the attacker’s right hand by placing your hand over his. This can be done with an explosive punching movement with your hand.

Pull the wrist toward you with your left and push down with your right, putting strain on the attacker’s wrist. Apply the pressure using your upper body and even your legs, not just your arms. This hold should take place approximately a forearm’s length away from your body for maximum force.

Burst forward, pushing the arm to the outside of the attacker’s shoulder and then down. Be prepared to move farther forward with your feet if the attacker’s fall requires it.

Immediately twist sharply back, laying your shin against his neck and your knee along his arm to prevent him from rolling out.

Cavalier #3

This cavalier often causes the attacker’s hand to open, and is effective if you wish to make him let go of an object.

This cavalier can be the same as either #1 or #2, except that instead of placing one hand on the wrist and one on the hand, both hands are on the wrist and both thumbs push the back of the hand down to make the technique.

Starting Position: Catch the attacker’s hand and wrist in your two hands. Place both thumbs on the back of his hand; be sure your fingers around his wrist do not brace the wrist and prevent it from bending.

Pull with your fingers and push with your thumbs so the attacker’s hand goes down toward his wrist. This will cause his hand to open.

From here, you can take him down as in #1 and #2.

Cavalier #4

Cavalier #4 is made when the attacker’s wrist is too strong, or when the defender wants the cavalier to knock an object out of the attacker’s hand.

Starting Position: Grab the attacker’s right wrist with your left hand.

With your right arm, deliver an elbow strike to the attacker’s wrist.

As soon as you feel that you’ve broken the wrist, press down with your forearm until you take the attacker down.
