Hip Throw

The hip roll is a variant of the one-arm shoulder throw. Instead of trapping the attacker’s arm/shoulder, you grab him around the waist or neck.

Starting Position: Attacker has his right arm extended towards you, perhaps after making a wide hook that you have blocked.

Grab the inside of the attacker’s wrist with your left hand while stepping in. With your right arm, reach around the attacker’s left hip. Ideally you’d grab at the belt or pants, but if nothing is available, grab skin or just wrap your hand/arm tightly around him. You should also now have your back to the attacker with your hips square with his hips and your own feet relatively close together. Drop your hips below his and punch them back, “lifting” him up onto your hips.

Using your arms for extra force, drive your right shoulder to your left hip, rolling him over the top of you and down into the ground.

Variation: You can also wrap your right arm around the attacker’s neck, rather than his waist, and grab at his shoulder.

Face-to-Face Flip (“Sacrifice” Throw)

This throw is usually done successfully in a clinch when the attacker’s weight is overcommitted forward. The attacker needs to know fall breaks, and you should have good mats on which to train.

Starting Position: Left-leg-forward fighting stance.

As the attacker comes in, grab his shirt collar tightly with both hands. Drop your weight down like you’re sitting straight down toward the floor. Do NOT fall backward; you want to stay near the attacker. As you do so, bring your back foot up (with your knee bent tightly so it can fit between your body and your attacker’s) and place it against the attacker’s hip/belt buckle. It helps to center your foot on the attacker’s body to avoid slipping off the hip, and to angle your foot with the heel in and toes pointed out.

Round your back as you hit the floor. Continuing to hold on with your hands so that the attacker lands close to you, use your leg to kick/push the attacker over your head so that he flips and lands on his back.

Roll backward to end up in a full mount. It’s also possible to roll into a side mount (see picture 7).

Variation: This can also be done in a clinch, with the attacker leaning his weight on you. It is also possible, although more difficult, to make the technique while doing a Muay Thai- style hold around the attacker’s neck. Be sure you turn your head to one side to avoid an accidental headbutt.

Once you flip the attacker over, continue over in a somersault to land either in a full mount or side mount.

Self-Defense Headlock from Behind

This defense is made when the attacker jumps on the defender from behind and attempts to apply a headlock.

Starting Position: The attacker jumps on you from behind and attempts to apply a headlock with his right arm.

Tuck your chin and turn it to avoid the choke (in this example, the defender turns his chin to the left). Immediately drop your right shoulder to your left knee, rolling him over the top of you and straight down.

Continue with counters (punches, stomps, kicks, etc.).
