Educational Portal for primary school pupils using Data Mining

*University of Žilina, Department of Informatics, Žilina, Slovakia, 10026

Introduction. The modern human can hardly imagine his life without computer and internet. All members of the family have access to these modern technologies, wether it is the adults or the children. In the case of the children, this is not always positive. Although they learn the basic skills for working with the computer, which they will certainly find useful in their future, they tend to spend too much time with the computer, at the expense of learning or otherwise oriented relaxation [1]. Most of the time, they plat games, which are not aimed at providing education for the children. This fact has also been confirmed by pedagogues from the primary school Žilina – Závodie. It was in cooperation with them, that we decided to create an attractive virtual educational portal for children, who attend primary school. The goal of this portal is to lead the children to solve routine tasks from the primary school subjects (like languages, mathematics, etc.), in a manner most attractive to them, in the form of a game. The children would be able to exercise their knowledge in a playful manner. The portal is intended for home use, but if the teacher decide, they can make it a part of the classical educational process. The portal is unique in another way, that it will contain a data mining mechanism.

Data Mining as a part of the portal. During the use of the portal, there will a great amount of data recorded and stored in the database. In most cases of the virtual portals, these collected data are not analysed in any way, because these portal do not contain and do not have implemented mechanism, which would perform such an analysis. These data can contain many dependencies, which would be useful in the educational process. To be possible to perform this analysis, it is necessary to implement and use Data Mining. Some of the Data Mining methods are the following: decision trees, decision rules, decision tables, clustering, classificators etc. [2-5]. Many methods exist, among them those, that can work with noise data [6,7]. To simplify the process of data classification, the Data mining layer of the portal (see the next chapter) contain a Fuzzy C-Mean Clustering module [8-11]. Besides this module, the Data Mining layer contains a module to specify the measure of data dependability for the data stored in the database [12].

Model of the attractive educational portal

The portal is realised as a software solution, consisting of four layers. (see

Figure 1: Attractive virtual educational portal

The first layer is a interactive medium, through which the players can communicate with each other. It is a sort of a virtual club with the option of free registration. Based on it, every member of the club receives a profile, which is identical for every user after registration. The task of the member of the club is to work on improving his profile. The virtual world consists of objects from the real world, such as school, mail office, police station etc.. Through playing the games, the user receives credits, which he can use to improve his profile in the virtual world. The pupil learns in the form of a game and his motivation is to be the best, to have the best profile.

The second layer is formed by educational modules, consisting of a set of games. The tasks solved during the game correspond to basic school subjects, for the student to learn the new information and consolide the existing knowledge, all in a playful manner. The project is conceived to allow continous addition (even after the project is finished) of new modules.

The first two layers are mainly used by the pupils and their parents.

The third layer – database, integrates 2 databases: the database of the task settings and the database of the student reaction – a database of answers. Its role is to store all the results of the answers [13,14] for the future analysis with efficient methods of intelligent analysis. A special interface will be created for the pedagogues to allow them interaction with this layer.

The fourth layer contains methodics of intelligent analysis of data gained from the pupil‘s learning. The basis for the analysis will be formed by original methods of knowledge discovery, created by the authors of the project.

To make the process of education more effective, the project will direct itself

on:

a)Success analysis

b)Teacher classification analysis

c)Test tasks content analysis

The portal will be multilingual, and so it will support other languages besides slovak. The databases of the portal will be publicly accessible, while also securing access for experts, to allow them to perform research on the collected data.

Conclusion. The attractive virtual educational portal should be and efficient system in the area of education, aimed at the pupils of the primary schools. At the

752

same time, it will provide the specialists in the field of data mining with an opportunity to work with a large amount of real data, which can help them in their research work. Also, the creation of new algorithms for data processing can become a basis for formation of new applications of intelligent analysis

Attractive Virtual Educational Portal – Layer 4 ( Data Mining Module) –

Fuzzy C-Means Clustering

*University of Žilina, Department of Informatics, Žilina, Slovakia, 10026

The project of an educational portal for elementary school pupils creates an opportunity to collect large amounts of data concerning the knowledge and skills of the children. To enable the users (especially teachers, data analysts, pedagogy experts and child psychologists) to perform statistical research on the data collected during the pupils‗ usage of the portal‘s games and tests, a data mining module is being implemented, forming the fourth layer of the portal. The goal of this module is to implement several basic data mining algorithms and to form a program apparatus, capable of performing analysis on the data, collected in the database layer of the portal (the third layer).

One of the functions of this apparatus is to provide a classifier using an implementation of the Fuzzy C-means clustering (FCM) algorithm . By being able to use the FCM on data files, exported from the database layer and the fuzzy classifier with the centers computed by the FCM , the user is provided with a tool to evaluate the students‗ results, the educational value of the tests or games and the level of understanding of the different topics in a subject. This evaluation can serve to improve the portal content, to modify the curriculum used by the teachers in their respective subjects and form the basis for a more accurate classification system by considering the actual results of the tests, instead of relying on a set of predefined (hard/crisp) rules.

Clustering is the process of dividing a set of elements into classes (clusters), based on their similarity. Depending on the nature of the data and the purpose for which clustering is being used, different measures of similarity (or distance) may be used to place the elements into classes, where the similarity measure controls the way the clusters are formed. Hard (or crisp) clustering assigns each element into exactly one cluster. Fuzzy clustering is using fuzzy logic to assign a set of membership degrees to each cluster for every element in the set. These degrees serve to describe the measure of the element belonging to any of the clusters and later to assign the element to one or more clusters. One of the most frequently used types of fuzzy clustering is fuzzy C-means clustering [1-3] (Bezdek 1981), which serves to partition a set of variables into C fuzzy clusters. Given a finite set of data, the algorithm returns a list of C cluster centres C = {c1,...,cc} and a partition matrix U

= ui,j ϵ [0,1], i =1,...,n, j=1,...,c, where each element uij tells the degree to which element

xi belongs to cluster cj. The FCM aims to minimize an objective function, using the distance measure between the centers of clusters and elements. The standard function is:

The FCM algorithm used in the educational portal‘s data mining module is implemented in the C++ language. The input is a data file, containing values

754

selected and exported from a database (the required interface for selection will be a part of the database layer of the portal). The algorithm will be able to use different distance measures [4] (Euclidean, Chebyshev, weighted, etc.) for the center computing. After entering the required number of clusters for each attribute, the algorithm computes their centers, using the accuracy (a parameter for the objective function minimization)and the m-parameter (level of fuzziness of the clusters, value of 0-1 would result in crisp clusters, therefore m=2 is most commonly used) entered by the user. The centers are then saved into a file and ready for further usage by a fuzzy classifier. To be able to evaluate the performance of this algorithm, a program with the same functionality has been created, this time using the built-in C++ mechanisms in Mathworks Matlab, specifically the fcm() function. The results are yet to be tested and compared with usage of statistical methods.

As part of the testing, the centers computed by the FCM algorithm will serve as initial input centers for an efficient fuzzy classifier with feature selection based on fuzzy enthropy [5], along with the centers computed by the Matlab engine to enable comparison between the results. This classifier will later serve to perform fuzzy clustering in the educational portal itself. Like the FCM algorithm , the fuzzy classifier will be implemented in the C++ language.

E A SX D

(1)

X

(R / L ) X

(S

i

/ L ) X

i

(Q P ) / L ,

(2)
