10. Read and memorize the dialogue. Represent it in class.

M: What do you think about the state of the world economy?

A: It's stabile.

M: Why do you think it is stable?

A: Some natural calamities, perhaps… Even our prominent people who come back from there say that, I really think that having a car and a house, this gives me…

M: So seeing that people are well-off there, you believe that their situation is stable, isn't it?

A: Materially, they are much better off than we are.

M: Why do you think everything is stable in the world economy?

A: Because we would be the first to learn about it, our media would gladly report it.

M: Only from the media?

A: If any signs of decline appeared, our media would happily tell us about this, that we are not alone.

11. As you can see the discussion of the state of the world economy is based on the arguments the respondents get from the media, which they acknowledge themselves. Take any newspaper article and make a report on the current events in the world economy. Here are some useful phrases to speak on a newspaper article:

a) How to begin:

The article I’m going to give a review of is taken (chosen) from...

The article I’m going to deal with is...

It is published under a splash, eye-catching, banner, front-page, screaming headline...

It is headlined...

The front-page headline/ strap-headline above reads:

Introducing the key-points of the article:

I would like to begin by... I would like to comment on the problem of...

I would like to make a few remarks concerning... I would like to mention briefly that...

There are three points to make...

The most important points seem to me to be...

First of all we must bear in mind... At the outset...To begin with...

Firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally...

I would like now to turn briefly to the problem of...

The next issue I would like to focus on is...

THE PROBLEM (a burning, controversial, explosive, moral, acute, complicated) ... catches/hits headlines......makes the headlines.....is again in the headline...gets major treatment in the article ... gives full coverage to......gets wide coverage in......receives generous coverage ... comes in for intensive coverage in ...... has detailed coverage of ...Much coverage is devoted to .../... gets covered in......devotes (part of) its front page (and a number of inside pages) to.....

b)Commenting on: to arouse, cause (considerable, critical, favourable, unfavourable) comments

The author of the article reports at length......takes an offbeat look at......considers another serious topic......considers......discusses….outlines......turns its attention to......looks at......reminds us that......notes...... feels that... expresses the view that......argues that......asserts that......deals with......believes that... suggests that.....has words of warning for ...... is adamant that......voices concern about......takes a more cynical view... has no doubt that ... has no illusions about......goes so far as to say that......takes issue with...

Adding: Giving an example:

In addition... Let me give an example...

I might add that... To illustrate this point let us consider...

As well as… there is also... A case in point is...

Furthermore....

Moreover...

Balancing:

On the one hand..., but on the other hand... Although we mustn't forget...

Whereas we have to remember... In spite of... I still think...Despite the fact that... I...

Stating preferences:

I’d rather ... than... I prefer to... I tend to favour... as opposed...

The main advantage of... is that...

Making digression:

Let me mention in passing... Oh, that makes me think...To change the subject... By the way... Oh, that reminds me... While I remember...To get off the topic for a moment.......but that is beside the point...

Returning to the topic:

Anyway, I was saying... Back to our main topic...To come back to what I was saying...

To go on with what I was saying...
