MY FAVOURITE ENGLISH WRITER:

CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870)

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812. His father worked as a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. Four years later the family moved to Chatham, where little Charles had some elementary education at school. As soon as Dickens learned to read, he immersed himself in books.

When Dickens was ten years old, the family moved to London, where they lived in a poor part of the city. In 1824 Dickens' father was imprisoned for debts and had to spend six months in debtors' prison Charles had to earn his bread. His schooling was discontinued, and he was put to work in a blacking warehouse where he pasted labels on blacking bottles. The work was not hard, but the conditions were miserable. At one time he was placed in the window of the shop to do his work there, so that everybody might see what business the firm were doing. The boy was very unhappy. The misery of these days made a great impression on Dickens and influenced his later work.

Only after his father had been released from debtors' prison, Charles was put back in school. Then, at the age of 15, he went to work at a lawyer's office, a job he did not like much. In 1830-1835 he worked as a reporter for various newspapers. It gave him a wide experience that he later could use it in his novels.

His first story Mr. Minus and his Cousin was published in the Monthly Magazine in 1833. The editor requested more short stories, and other publications followed. Dickens began using the pen name "Boz", a nickname he borrowed from his younger brother. In 1836 Dickens collected his early works into Sketches by Boz, a series of essays on contemporary people and manners. The book was much spoken about.

Then Dickens wrote The Adventures of Oliver Twist (1837-1838) and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1838—1839). His books came out in a series, a chapter at a time. Oliver Twist dealt with a serious social problem. Dickens exposed the working of the Poor Laws1. Oliver Twist, an orphan, was brought up in a work-house where everybody was cruel to him. Having left the workhouse, the boy might have become a thief if it had not been for Mr. Brownlow. Mr. Brownlow helped Oliver to become a gentleman. Dickens told an unpleasant truth about the terrible conditions in which the poor of London lived. It was a great shock to many of the richer people of the time.

Nicholas Nickleby continued the serious social commentary that characterised Dickens' novels, dealing with the conditions in schools where unwanted children were abandoned. The writer's popularity continued to grow, both in Europe and the United States.

At an early age Dickens had some thoughts of the stage. In 1858, he started doing a series of public readings of his own works. These readings were immensely popular, and they continued until his death. In these public readings, Dickens revealed a dramatic ability that indicated that he could have been a very successful actor.

Dickens' books have been translated into many languages, and millions of copies have been sold. Even today, more than 100 years after his death, Dickens is read and loved all over the world.
