Unit X.

I. Read and translate the text. Scottish textiles: Tartan

Tartan is the other Scottish fabric that has come to symbolize the national identity and enjoys a long history in Scotland as a woven, patterned wool-cloth. There is evidence that the ancient Celts used striped and checked woolen material for practical and warm garments to the Roman tunic; there is also documentation to support the claim that tartans marked membership of different clans.

Do you know that a part of the traditional costume of a Scotsman is the kilt? This short pleated skirt is worn by men in the Highlands. It was the dress of the old-time Highlanders and was very suitable for going through wet, moorland country. The kilt worn by each clan was made up of a special pattern, intricately woven. This colourful cloth is called tartan It is woolen fabric with stripes of various colours crossing at right angles. Each Scottish Highland clan had its own territory and its own special tartan.

Tartan fabric is now woven all over the world, a multimillion pound industry in which Scotland has to complete. Scottish tartan occupies a quality prestige niche: the best-known mills are Lochcarron, Robert Noble.

Robert Noble is known for Scottish regimental kilt fabric which has to be woven on old-fashioned, slow and cumbersome weaving machine. Only these old-technology looms can create a piece of fabric that is level edge to edge in the way that kilt production requires.
