Unit XI.
Read and translate the text. Wash-and-wear and easy-care fabrics
Wash-and-wear and easy-care fabrics and garments are in use now, because of the development of man-made fibres and of synthetic resins the possibilities for such fabrics have greatly increased. Wash-and-wear garments are those that will satisfactorily retain their original neat appearance after repeated wear and laundering with little if any touch-up ironing. This means that the garment will retain any pressed- in creases or pleats and be essentially free from undesirable wrinkles both during wear and after laundering.
Fabrics printed or those woven or knitted in patterns and colours appear to be satisfactory than plain colours or white because creases and fine wrinkles are less apparent. Light colours are more successful than dark colours for the same reasons. The design of the garment also has considerable influence on wrinkle-free appearance, because the fabrics must be treated before the garments are cut and sewn, for wash-and-wear apparel, usually patterns with few seams are more successful than those with many seams.
Since so much of the satisfaction in appearance and service of wash-and-wear fabrics, apparel, and other items depends on the washing, drying, and ironing procedures followed, it seems desirable to think through some suggestions for care. As in so many things, prevention of unwanted wrinkles, creases, and soil may be much more effective than any kind of care. It would seem a good idea to keep such garments on hangers, even when soiled. After washing, when garments are dried their appearance can be noticeably improved by smoothing out the seams, creases, and pleats, with the fingers when the garment is partially dry.
