Surgical Diseases, Symptoms
Achalasia - is a disorder of the esophagus in which the nerves and muscles do not work properly, causing swallowing difficulties, sometimes chest pain, regurgitation and its consequent coughing and breathing problems if food gets into the lungs.
Appendicitis - is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix. It is classified as a medical emergency and many cases require removal of the inflamed appendix, either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Symptoms: pain first, vomiting next and fever.
Hemorrhoids - are vascular structures in the anal canal which help with stool control. They become pathological or piles when swollen or inflamed. In their physiological state, they act as a cushion composed of arterio-venous channels and connective tissue. The symptoms of pathological hemorrhoids depend on the type present. Internal hemorrhoids usually present with painless rectal bleeding while external hemorrhoids may produce few symptoms.
Cholecystitis - is inflammation of the gallbladder. Usually presents as a pain in the right upper quadrant or epigastric region. Symptomatically it differs from biliary colic by the presence of an inflammatory component. This pain is initially intermittent, but later usually presents as constant and severe. The pain is originally located in the right upper quadrant but the referred pain may occur in the right scapula region.
Hernia - is the protrusion of an organ or the fascia of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. There are different kinds of hernia, each requiring a specific management or treatment. Symptoms and signs vary depending on the type of hernia. In the case of reducible hernias, a bulge in the groin or in another abdominal area can often be seen and felt. When standing, such a bulge becomes more obvious. Besides the bulge, other symptoms include pain in the groin that may also include a heavy or dragging sensation, and in men, there is sometimes pain and swelling in the scrotum around the testicular area.
Pancreatic Disease- is a disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. Pancreatic damage occurs when the digestive enzymes are activated before they are secreted into the duodenum and begin attacking the pancreas. Symptoms: upper abdominal pain that radiates into the back, swollen and tender abdomen, nausea and vomiting, fever, increased heart rate.
Stomach cancer - refers to cancer arising from any part of the stomach. Stomach cancer is often either asymptomatic or it may cause only nonspecific symptoms in its early stages. Stomach cancer can cause the following signs and symptoms: indigestion or a burning sensation, loss of appetite, especially for meat, weakness and fatigue, bloating of the stomach, usually after meals, abdominal pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and occasional vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.
