VII. Translate the sentences paying attention to comparisons“the more… the better…”type

1. The more rapid the rate of decomposition of the organic matter, the more rapid is the rate of aggregation.

2. The more rapid the decomposition of cellulosic organic matter, the greater is the production of mucus; hence the better is the resulting structure.

3. The higher the percentage of readily decomposable constituents in the organic matter, the greater is its effect on soil aggregation.

4. The finer the material. the greater its removal by erosion.

5. The more sand the soil contains, the greater is the likelihood of blowing.

6. The higher the velocity of the wind, the greater is the amount of crop residue required.

The higher the soil fertility is raised, the greater becomes the value of an inch of water conserved.

7. The more carbohydrates there is in a soil the greater will be the increase in microbial population.

8. The greater amount of water in a soil the smaller the amount of energy required to reduce the moisture content.

9. The smaller the capillary diameter, the higher the water will rise.

10. The larger the yield, the greater is the demand for nutrients.

11. The finer the capillary space, the more resistant they are to force which drain them of capillary water.

12. The more rapid the decomposition o the organic matter, the better is the structure of the soil.

13. The lower the carbon content of a given soil, the higher is the percentage of uronic carbon in the organic matter.

14. The more rapid the decomposition, the higher the state of aggregation.

VIII. Translate the sentences paying attention to the verb “to become”

1. If the deficiency of moisture continues the older leaves may become dry and drop off.

2. The lime becomes carbonated rapidly when decomposition of the manure is taking place.

3. As the water diffuses into the dry soil, it becomes possible for the plant to obtain nutrients.

4. As clay particles become smaller in size they have tremendous surface in proportion to their weight and volume.

5. In temperate and colder climates, bacteria become active in spring.

6. Superphosphate becomes the world’s first commercial fertilizer.

7. The proper use of soil resources has now become a matter of importance to all of us.

8. Tile drains with good outlets, if properly constructed, rarely become clogged.

9. Fertilizer stimulates early growth, thus hastening the date when the cover becomes effective.

10. As the soil dries out, the salts in the soil water become more concentrated.

11. The drier a soil becomes, the tighter the water is held.

12. As the soil becomes drier, the force of attraction between soil and water increases until plants cannot remove moisture from the soil.

IX. Find in the sentences Past Participle, define its function. Translate the sentences

1. Coarse granulated soils drift closer to the ground than more finely pulverized soils.

2. In attacking a heterogeneous deposit, the wind tends to remove the finer particles and leaves the coarse ones.

3. The smaller clay particles are usually more effective in the formation of aggregates than larger ones.

4. Color is one of the most useful and important characteristics for soil identification.

5. An area from which all the water must be removed by the underdrains will require larger tile than one that has good surface drainage.

6. In field strip cropping, the strips are laid out parallel to one another across the general slope.

7. A soil rich in organic matter absorbs rainfall more readily than one with a deficiency in organic matter.

8. No one method of water delivery will be equally suitable for all lands.

9. The beneficial effect of a sod plowed under for a cultivated crop has long been recognized.

9. Heavy fertilization usually leads to a much increased growth of the green manure.

10. In areas of low rainfall the salts formed by mineral decay may not be removed from the zone of decomposition.

11. There are occasional soils composed almost entirely of sand and humus.

12. Part of the sulfur removed from the soil in crops is returned to it in manure and crop residues.

13. The quantity of calcium used by a crop is not always a criterion of its tolerance to acidity.

14. A deficiency of available calcium is another explanation of the depressed growth of many crops on acid soils.

15. Wheat grown continuously on soils in a dry climate shows a gradual decline in protein content.
