Прочитайте текст, уделяя прежде всего особое внимание местоимениям some, any, no, every и их производным.

Tool № 1 for thinking: so far as I know

The six tools are actual instruments of thought that tune us into the deeper knowledge that lies within us. Each of the tools is a common everyday phrase that we can learn to skillfully use in both our thinking and conversation.

The tool № 1 so far as I know will remind us that the causes of anything and everything are infinitely complex, and no one has all the answers. No matter what we say is "the" reason for something, there are always many other underlying reasons that we could overlook. So we must silently add "so far as I know" to everything we say.

It is impossible to give a complete answer to any why. For an answer it is possible to ask another why. After a few more whys, we will be down to the level of molecules and atoms. And if we insist upon asking why to every answer, sooner or later we will come to a point where the best specialist in the world can no longer answer us. But, of course, anyone who has been around young children already knows that one can ask a why for every answer.

Fortunately, in most of our everyday situations, we do not need complete answers to our why.

(We went to the pub for a drink — Мы пошли в кабачок, чтобы выпить. They sent for a doctor — Они послали за доктором)

2) в течение — в предложениях со сказуемыми в форме Perfect (§ 88) и Perfect Continuous (§ 92) (Не has not worked for years — Он не работает уже в течение многих лет. I have been living here for twenty years — Я живу здесь уже двадцать лет)

(I decided to have lunch, for I was hungry — Я решил позавтракать, так как был голоден. § 129)

4) в обороте for + сущ.+ Infinitive (§ 124) for имеет значение чтобы (I am anxious ['æokʃəs] for the party to be a success — Мне хочется, чтобы вечер удался)

Используйте Блок 37 (for).

Tool № 3 for thinking — to me

Our interests and point of view determine to a large extent what causal factors we consider important. What may be an important cause to us may not be important to someone else. We must not fool ourselves and think that we see only the "true" causes of things. We see the causes we are hunting for, and we reject as insignificant the causes that do not embrace our interests.

For everything that happens there are many underlying causal factors. Every person will single out as most important the one that his own interests and knowledge pick out for him.

For the prevention of accidents, some points of view may be more useful than others. But all points of view are useful in helping us (to) build up the fullest understanding of what happened and why. We must avoid the temptation to insist that any one point of view is "the" cause.

So, whenever we start talking about the cause of something, we should add to me to our ideas to remind us that we are diagnosing causes from our own point of view, and there are many other possible points of view besides ours.

to а large extent — в значительной степени;

to some extent — do некоторой степени;

to such an extent — до такой степени; То what extent?

cause [kɔ:z] — причина, основание (cause and effect — причина и следствие).

...we are hunting for — за которым мы сейчас охотимся.

...we are diagnosing ['daɪɔɡnəuzɪŋ]— мы в данный момент прогнозируем

to single out, to pick out — наречие out значит: вне, снаружи, наружу, вон.

to pick out — отобрать
